Cellulose Nitrate (Mixed Cellulose Ester) Membrane Filters were designed to be used for a range of general laboratory applications where a membrane with a high, non-specific absorption is suitable.
Composition
These versatile membrane filters are cellulose nitrate (CN) or mixed cellulose ester (MCE) and are composed of cellulose nitrate and a small amount of cellulose acetate.
Hydrophilic, with Symmetric Structure
The Cellulose Nitrate (Mixed Cellulose Ester) Membrane Filters are hydrophilic membrane filters. Thanks to their symmetric structure, they have high flow rates and are compatible with aqueous solutions (pH 4 to 8), hydrocarbons, and several other organic solvents.
Pore Size
The Cellulose Nitrate (Mixed Cellulose Ester) Membrane Filters come in various pore sizes, ranging from 0.2 µm to 8 µm. Specific pore sizes include (in µm), 0.2, 0.45, 0.65, 0.8, 1.2, 3, 5 and 8.
Use in a Broad Variety of Applications
The Cellulose Nitrate (Mixed Cellulose Ester) Membrane Filters are recommended for a broad range of applications, like the filtration of aqueous solutions or sample preparation. The CN (MCE) filters can be used for particle retention and cell capture for aqueous and air samples.
Storage and Handling of CN Filters
Cellulose Nitrate (Mixed Cellulose Ester) Membrane Filters should be stored in a dust-free place and not above room temperature. You should avoid exposing them to sunlight, solvent, or other chemical vapors. They should be handled with care, as cellulose nitrate filters are highly flammable (flashpoint is approx. 200°C). The filters should always be separated by the interleaving paper discs supplied with the filters. Blunt-tipped forceps are required to remove the filter from the filter tray/package. Avoid touching filters with your fingers as skin perspiration of pressure may leave non-wettable spots. Always hold large-diameter filters in two places to prevent creasing.
